About us - The story of "But’s Charming Ruffians"

The story of "But's Charming Ruffians" starts in 1990.

Cornelia Bergundthal, Lindbergh Plage

Since my childhood, dogs of different breeds accompanied my life. At that time, I was owner of a German shepherd dog, named Claudine, she had been my companion for 10 years. Without wishing Claudine an early end, the time came to look for a successor. I had already decided not to have another  German shepherd.

But which other breed would fit me, my surrounding field, my requirements? There is a large selection of different breeds, but I had my own ideas and exact conceptions:

- height not over 40-50 cm
- smooth-haired (never again double coat!)
- attentively, intelligently, sportily, courageously
- as freely as possible of hereditary diseases
- good looking
- particularly in all parts

Suddenly the selection was small, i.e., there was no more selection for my desires. There was only one breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I started an intensive search for a breeder of Stafford’s. The SBT was here in Switzerland at that time very "exotic".

I finally found my first bitch in Germany in the kennel of Hans Schmidt. Her name was "Oak vom Kaiserstuhl"

"Oak vom Kaiserstuh" called "Mäusi" *20.5.1990 since 9.10.2001

After 2 years Snaky, an American Staffordshire Terrier, came into our house.

That was all a long time ago. "Oak", (for her friends "Maeusi") unfortunately died on 9.10.2001. The Staffy-typical persistence which "Oak" had shown, has me lastingly impressed and formed. Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s have unusually good and very special characteristics, which would be also desirable for humans.

Today, always lives 4-5 dogs with me in Wohlenschwil. I have been breeding Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier since 1992. In the spring 2000 I have welcomed a young Manchester Terrier with the name "Gadkey's Mystery" named "Lilly" into my crazy family. Lilly was a large enriching for our wild pack.

Facts and figures of 2009:

90 Staffordshire Bull Terrier from 17 litters- 24 American Staffordshire Terrier from 4 litters- 13 Manchester Terrier from 4 litters were registered under the affix .“But’s Charming Ruffians” by the Kennel Club of Switzerland, SKG.

We are very proud of all our dogs, the pleasure they bring, not only to us but their owners is unrivalled. We are particularly proud of those dogs, which conquer the hearts of those persons who have a wrong opinion. People with prejudices and refusals in relation to our breeds. To reverse such an opinion means more to us than all champion titles.

Our goal for the future will be to further the responsible promotion of our fascinating breeds.
